Officials overseeing the development of a new 250-unit retirement apartment community kicked off construction during a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday.

City, local business and project investors gathered at the site of the future Cambridge Village Senior Living of Wilmington to launch phase one of the development, according to a news release.

The $50 million development is located on a 14-acre parcel at the corner of Eastwood Road and Cavalier Drive, and will eventually tie into the Mayfaire Community Center development located behind the future apartment community.

Site work on the long-anticipated project has been ongoing since the spring.

The project is being constructed by Wilmington-based McKinley Building Corp. Engineering site work was completed by Wilmington-based McKim & Creed.

Plans call for phase one to include 126 apartments, a clubhouse and a 20,000-square-foot wellness center, the news release stated.

Crews hope to complete construction by early 2015. Meanwhile, advanced reservations for apartments are now being accepted at the Cambridge Village information office in a unit next to the Harris Teeter in the Mayfaire Community Center development on Military Cutoff Road.
